Pamela Colman Smith's Rider-Waite Temperance: a winged figure pouring between two cups, one foot on land and one in water, irises, a path to mountains and a gold crown-sun, a triangle on the breast.

Major Arcana

Temperance

Adept's Journey lesson · Mystic Oracle · updated 7 September 2026

At a glance

A mix, two cups, a pace you can actually keep.

Upright

Balance, moderation, patience, purpose.

Reversed

Imbalance, excess, self-healing, re-alignment.

In the picture

When you look at the card, it tells this story: a winged figure standing with one foot on land and one in a pool, pouring a stream from cup to cup. Irises grow at the water. A path leads toward mountains and a far gold light like a crown in the sun. On the chest is a triangle in a square. Nobody is rushing. The pour is the whole plot.

If you found yourself sitting with this after a reading, the picture is asking you to mix two real speeds — not to pick a dramatic extreme.

In a reading

If you saw Temperance in a reading, you could interpret it like this: two things in your week need to share a stream. Work and rest. Speed and care. An old method and a new one. Not blandness. Not a personality of being moderate. One practised mix.

The poster is balance, patience, alchemy. Keep that as a glance. The live meaning is you, pouring, one foot in each world, still a person who has to walk the path.

In this three-card spread

Past

If this card landed in Past, think of a mix that already worked. A schedule that held. A collaboration. Write it in your journal — you have poured between cups before.

Present

If you drew it in Present, you could interpret it as this week's two cups. Name them. Then name the pour. If you can only see all-or-nothing, look at the two feet in the picture.

Future

If it is in Future, you could read it as you after a week of that mix: still yourself, a little further up the path, not a saint of balance.

Reversed

If you saw Temperance reversed, it is not a failed angel. You could interpret it two ways. Maybe you are all one cup, binge and crash. Or you are mixing so carefully that nothing ever leaves the bowls. Ask which one sounds like you. Then one small correction: a real pour, or a stop to the blend that is only stalling.

On the Fool's Journey

  • Before this card: Death
  • After this card: The Devil

Today's practice

When you look at the card again, name the two cups and the two feet before you say the keywords. In your journal, write the two speeds you will mix this week, and how. If this one came up in a Major Arcana practice, stay with the pour first.

A worked example

Say you work in late spikes and then vanish. If you drew Temperance in Present, you could interpret it like this: two hours today, two tomorrow, no hero night. Past might be a week you actually paced and still delivered. Future is you, still on the work, walking the path instead of leaping the mountain.

When Temperance shows up in a three-card reading, what mix is it asking you to practise?

If you saw Temperance in a three-card reading, it is not asking you to become bland. It is asking you to pour between two real cups. When you look at the card, it tells this story: wings, one foot on land, one in water, a stream from cup to cup, irises, a path toward a far gold light, no hurry in the shoulders.

You could interpret Past as a mix that already held. Present as this week's two speeds, named, and the pour between them. Future as you a little further up the path, still yourself.

Do not wait until you feel balanced, and do not hear this as a command to never want anything strongly. The figure is already pouring. Mix the two things you actually have. Then journal how the stream ran, and where you tried to be only one cup.
